What to Expect

THE TREATMENT PROCESS

1

Diagnostic

Assessment

We’ll start with a free consultation to ensure you feel confident in your choice of therapist. Next, we will meet for a comprehensive assessment to understand your specific challenges. These assessments typically take up to 90 minutes. In the initial appointment, I conduct a thorough assessment and ask questions to better understand you, your experiences, and the biological, psychological, social, and structural factors that are affecting your well-being. And, I will listen deeply to your answers. This first appointment will likely be different than most therapy visits you've had in the past.

2

Customized

Treatment

Together, we will develop a treatment plan that will help you learn and use personalized strategies using evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques.

This is your therapy and I want to ensure we are working toward your goals.

Treatment works best when we meet regularly. Typically, we will plan to meet once a week on an ongoing basis. CBT-based care often takes 12-20 sessions for diagnostic improvement, but many people continue to benefit from ongoing sessions as symptoms decline. So, you should expect to experience real improvement in as little as 3 months.

3

Skill

Building

You will learn practical skills to challenge negative and unhelpful thoughts, change behaviors, and by doing so, improve your emotional and overall well-being.

Some examples of skills include:

  • Learning how to identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts

  • Generating balanced and helpful thoughts

  • Engaging in activities that increase feelings of accomplishment and pleasure

  • Learning relaxation techniques

  • Practicing acceptance

  • Enhancing mindful awareness of the present moment

4

Supportive

Environment

I provide a safe and non-judgmental space for exploration and growth, and provide affirmative care to individuals of all races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, cultures, and religions.

I can also liaise with other providers in your treatment team (physicians, psychiatrists, other psychologists) to coordinate care and work to ensure your needs are being met. I can also meet jointly with your family or loved ones to discuss how best to support your treatment goals.

Appointment Format

I provide in-person and telehealth services. Telehealth sessions are completed via HIPAA-compliant a secure videoconferencing platform.

Consultation

There is no charge for a 15-minute consultation call to determine if I am the right therapist for you. Please feel free to contact me to schedule a consultation. I believe that therapy works best when the therapeutic alliance is strong and people seeking a therapist should feel empowered to find the right fit. If you think I am not the right fit, I would be happy to refer you to one of my talented colleagues.

Diagnostic assessment

Also referred to as intake sessions, typically a 90-minute appointment.

Weekly Therapy Sessions

Research shows that therapeutic change occurs when individuals engage in therapy regularly. As such, we will do our best to have weekly 50-minute sessions. A standard course of CBT treatment, depending on the issues we target, can take 12-20 sessions to alleviate symptoms and experience a remission in diagnosis. However, many people benefit from continued sessions for longer periods of time, which can of course be accommodated.
