What to Expect

THE TREATMENT PROCESS

Starting therapy can feel uncertain. Here’s exactly what the process looks like, so you know what you’re signing up for before we even speak.

1

Step 1:

Free Consultation (15 minutes)

We start with a no-cost 15-minute phone call. This is your opportunity to ask questions, share a bit about what you’re looking for, and get a sense of whether I’m the right fit for you. The research is clear: therapy works best when the therapeutic relationship is strong, so if you feel I’m not the right match, I’ll be glad to help you find someone who is.

2

Step 2: Comprehensive Assessment

If we decide to move forward, we begin with a thorough diagnostic assessment. I ask detailed questions about your history, your current challenges, and the biological, psychological, social, and structural factors shaping your experience. This appointment will likely feel different from past therapy intakes — it’s more systematic, and it gives us both a clear picture of where we’re starting from.

For coaching clients: there is no diagnostic component, but I still do an in-depth intake to understand your goals, values, financial situation (as relevant), and what you’re hoping coaching will help you achieve.

Step 3: Collaborative Treatment Plan

Together, we develop a personalized plan based on your goals and the best available evidence.

For therapy, this typically draws on CBT and related approaches. For coaching, the plan centers on the behavioral, cognitive, and psychological patterns you want to address. You drive the goals,  I provide the structure and expertise.

Step 4:

Weekly Sessions and Skill Building

Weekly 55-minute sessions are the foundation of our work. Research consistently shows that regular, frequent sessions produce better outcomes than sporadic ones. Over time, you’ll build a personalized toolkit of practical skills — for challenging unhelpful thoughts, changing behaviors, managing stress, and approaching your life with greater intentionality.

For most therapy presentations, a standard CBT course is 12–20 sessions for meaningful symptom improvement. Many clients continue beyond this for maintenance and continued growth.

For coaching clients: we may meet less frequently and for less total sessions. Many clients  experience benefit in as few as 4 sessions.
